APPLETREE
GROUP CAMP - Appletree Group
Camp is available to groups of ten or more people by reservation
only. It is located 24 miles west of Franklin on the Andres
Road (S.R. 1401). There are four sites with restores and on
shower facility. It is located on the Nantahala River and
adjacent to several trails. Reservations may be made by calling
the Wayah Ranger District at 828-524-6441.
FEREBEE MEMORIAL
RECREATIONAL AREA - Ferebee
Memorial is in Nantahala Gorge on U.S. 19, 4 miles north of
Topton. It has picnic tables with grills, toilets, and a launching
area for canoes, rafts, and kayaks.
NANTAHALA GORGE
- The Nantahala Gorge surrounds the Nantahala River. The Nantahala
River is a popular whitewater river for rafting, canoeing,
and kayaking. The river trip is 8.5 miles long. Whitewater
is conditional on water release by the power company. Individuals
can use their own boats. Many people use the services of commercial
outfitters located in the gorge. The Nantahala River Launch
Site for put-ins is located at the junction of U.S. 19 and
S.R. 1310 at Beechertown. Ferebee Memorial (Number 11) is
a midpoint take-out and put-in. Wesser (downstream from Nantahala
Outdoor Center) is a take-out landing and viewing area.
WESSER BALD OBSERVATION
TOWER - The tower is located
1.4 miles north of Tellico Gap on the Appalachian Trail. A
wooden platform has been built on the base of an old fire
tower. There are spectacular scenic views from the platform.
From Franklin take U.S. 64 west 3 miles. Turn right at the
Wayah Bald directional sign. Take the first left on the Wayah
Road (S.R. 1310). Follow S.R. 1310 across Wayah Gap, past
Nantahala Lake and turn tight on Tellico Gap Road (S.R. 1365).
Stay on the road for 4 miles and you will be in Tellico Gap.
The Appalachian Trail will head north on your left toward
the tower. |
