GLEN
FALLS - Glen Falls is composed
of three waterfalls that drop about 60 feet each. The view
of Blue Valley is also a scenic attraction. The 1-mile foot
trail to the falls is steep. The area is located 3 miles south
of Highlands on N.C. 106, then to S.R. 1618.
WHITEWATER FALLS
- The upper falls, which is in North Carolina, cascades for
411 feet and is the highest falls east of the Mississippi
River. The lower falls, in South Carolina, is 400 feet tall.
A scenic view of the upper falls is a 5 minute walk from the
parking lot. The rock crevasses along the falls and the constant
mist provide a habitat for several species of tropical ferns
and byrophytes. The Foothills Trail crosses the Whitewater
River on a bridge just below the falls. It is 1 mile on a
steep trail to the river from the parking lot. Take U.S. 64
to Cashiers and take N.C. 197 south into South Carolina. Turn
left on Wigington Road (S.C. 37-413), which ends in 2 miles
at a stop sign. Turn left on S.C. 130, which becomes N.C.
281. The falls will be on the right side of the road just
after you cross back into North Carolina. |
